Description
Located in Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican, Rome, this bronze statue represents Saint Peter sitting on its throne. His left hand is holding the keys to Heaven while his right hand is held in blessing gesture.
Tradition encourages pilgrims to touch Saint Peter's foot as an act of devotion. Over time, this repeated gesture has slightly worn down the surface through friction.
Two identical statues were found at different cathedrals, notably Notre-Dame of Paris, located in the ambulatory, behind the altar.
