Description

This fragment of red marble veneer with white sponge fossils was found in the fill of a burial dated to the 10th-11th centuries. It originally adorned one of the walls of the martyrial basilica of Seclin, built in the mid-7th century over the tomb of Saint Piat.

Of indeterminate provenance, the marble was reused several centuries after it was first set in place, making it a witness to the successive phases of construction and rebuilding of the sanctuary.
